Project Highlight: Corbett Caboose

Custom Stonemasonry and Landscaping for Virginia’s Favorite AirBnB

When the Corbett family discovered an old caboose for sale in West Virginia, they envisioned a unique retreat along the James River. The restored railcar now welcomes visitors as a short-term rental, set within a landscape designed to echo the ecology of the river’s hillsides.

Our team created a pollinator garden in vivid tones of red and yellow—colors chosen to mirror the caboose itself. Yucca, coreopsis, yarrow, rudbeckia, and switchgrass establish a vibrant, resilient planting that supports pollinators while greeting guests with seasonal color.

To make the steep site functional into a parking pad, we built a retaining wall using broken concrete salvaged from an old pad on the property. This “urbanite” wall kept waste out of the landfill, reduced the need for new stone, and gave the Corbett family’s project a sustainable foundation.

Together, the caboose, garden, and wall form a small but layered landscape—playful, ecological, and rooted in its riverside setting.
